The Future of Banking is Technology-Driven

Brett King, renowned futurist and author, recently shared powerful insights into how banking is undergoing a seismic transformation. According to King, the very essence of what we understand as a ‘bank’ is shifting. In his keynote, he explained that banks must no longer view themselves as financial institutions, but as technology companies.

Artificial intelligence (AI), he emphasized, is not just another trend—it’s the cornerstone of future financial services. Within the next 15 to 20 years, most banks will operate as AI-driven platforms. In fact, by 2050, traditional human-led banking will be replaced almost entirely by autonomous systems.

The Critical Role of Artificial Intelligence

King described AI as a foundational and rapidly evolving technology, predicting that it will exceed human intelligence within a few years. He noted that OpenAI’s recent success in passing the Turing Test showcases how far AI has come: 75% of humans interacting with the AI could not tell it wasn’t human.

Beyond banking, AI will revolutionize industries by generating human-like content, solving complex diseases, and powering everything from customer service bots to logistics networks. As AI capabilities scale 5x every two years, banks must evolve quickly or risk becoming obsolete.

Redefining the Financial Consumer Experience

With intelligent personal agents becoming mainstream, financial institutions must adapt to a future where they market not to people, but to machines. Concepts like “Know Your Agent” (KYA) and “Know Your Machine” (KYM) are set to reshape compliance and customer engagement processes.

King also foresees the rise of smart glasses impacting how consumers interact with financial products. Real-time, data-targeted offers—from mortgages to instant credit—will appear in users’ fields of vision, creating a hyper-personalized experience. At the same time, payments will become invisible, processed autonomously—often delivered by drones or executed through smart devices.

The Rise of the Machine Economy

From humanoid robots operating in factories to AI agents managing autonomous bank accounts, the future economy will be profoundly automated. By the 2060s, as King projects, over half the global economy in developed nations will operate on autonomous and machine-based systems.

For this new digital and robotic environment, traditional banking rails will not suffice. What we need, King argues, is Algorithmic Banking or Bank 5.0—an agile, tech-first approach to financial services infrastructure.

Climate Change and Global Shifts

In addition to technological evolution, King warns that global systemic risks—especially climate change—are intertwined with the financial future. With sea levels rising, glacial melts happening now, and agricultural disruption looming large, banks and economies must plan for massive eco-financial shifts.

  • Climate-induced Displacement: 160 million people were displaced last year due to environmental causes.
  • Declining Agricultural Productivity: Southern Bangladesh alone is forecasted to see a 16% drop in rice yields by 2050.
  • Air Quality: 9.6 million global annual deaths are now attributed to poor air conditions.

These urgent issues demand new financial models and investment in sustainable, technology-driven solutions like vertical farming and 3D-printed housing.

A Shifting Global Economic Landscape

King also addressed macroeconomic and geopolitical factors, such as the ballooning U.S. debt—already at $37 trillion—and the potential decline of the dollar by the 2030s. This financial vacuum, he suggests, could pave the way for China’s economic dominance. Meanwhile, emerging markets such as Bangladesh offer unique opportunities for rapid financial inclusion through mobile technology.
