Rui Ma is a leading voice on China’s technology and venture landscape, with over two decades of experience spanning technology, finance, and cross-border investing between the US and China. She is the founder of Tech Buzz China, a widely followed platform launched in 2018 to educate and advise investors, funds, and entrepreneurs on Chinese technology companies, their products, strategies, and emerging trends. Through her analysis, Rui helps global audiences make sense of China’s fast-moving innovation ecosystem and its implications for global markets.
As an investor and advisor, Rui has worked across the full company lifecycle, from seed stage to pre-IPO. She previously served as an investment partner at 500 Global, where she focused on early-stage technology investments, drawing on her deep understanding of both US and China startup ecosystems. Her work is known for combining technical insight with commercial and strategic rigor, particularly in consumer tech, platforms, and digital business models.
Earlier in her career, Rui spent more than a decade in private equity, investment banking, and mergers and acquisitions roles at The Raine Group, Morgan Stanley, and Merrill Lynch, working across Silicon Valley and China. During this period, she advised on and executed complex cross-border transactions, gaining first-hand experience in scaling technology companies, capital markets, and global expansion strategies.
Rui’s academic background reflects her interdisciplinary approach to technology and business. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley, and has pursued further studies at Tsinghua University, INSEAD, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Harvard University. This blend of technical training and global business education underpins her ability to bridge innovation, investment, and strategy on the global stage.
